Golf Myths & Misunderstandings

Golf equipment is full of simple rules that get repeated so often they start to sound like facts. Many confuse what a club is designed to do with what actually happens when a golfer hits the ball.

Myth: More offset makes the ball go left

Offset does not automatically make the ball go left.

Offset moves the face farther behind the shaft. It is often said that this gives the club more time to close, but there is no simple rule that says a certain amount of offset will close the face by a predictable amount.

The golfer still delivers the face and path at impact. Offset can also be part of a head design that helps move weight farther back, and for many golfers the more useful change may be improved launch rather than a left bias.

What matters: the face, path and strike you actually deliver.

Myth: A high-launch shaft launches higher and a low-spin shaft reduces spin

Shafts can change launch and spin, but they do it by changing how the club is delivered.

A shaft bends and twists during the swing. Different weights, stiffnesses and bend profiles can change timing, strike location, delivered loft, face angle and club speed. Those changes can then change launch and spin.

The result is not the same for every golfer. A softer shaft does not always launch higher, and a stiffer shaft does not always lower spin. Two golfers can react very differently to the same shaft.

What matters: how the shaft changes your delivery, strike and consistency.

Myth: Game Improvement irons are forgiving and Players irons are unforgiving

Those are categories, not measurements of forgiveness.

Terms such as Players Iron, Players Distance and Game Improvement describe the general type of club. They do not tell you how much the result changes when you miss the middle of the face.

A better way to judge forgiveness is to look at the miss: how much ball speed, carry, launch, spin, start direction and curvature change compared with a good strike. MOI can play a part in how a head reacts, but it is not a forgiveness score by itself, and simply chasing higher MOI does not guarantee a better result.

What matters: how predictable the club remains across the strikes you actually produce.

Myth: High-handicap golfers need Game Improvement irons

Handicap tells you how well someone scores. It does not tell you what iron flight they need.

Two golfers with the same handicap can have completely different speed, shaft lean, strike patterns and launch. One may need help getting the ball higher while another may already launch a strongly lofted iron too low.

The more useful question is whether the golfer can produce the right launch, carry, peak height, spin and descent angle from the loft they are using. A club category cannot answer that.

What matters: fit the flight, not the handicap.

Myth: More spin means more accuracy

More spin does not automatically make the ball fly straighter.

A common idea is that more backspin helps cancel out sidespin. But the ball does not really have separate backspin and sidespin. It has one total spin direction.

If the spin axis is tilted, adding more total spin increases both the straight-back part of the spin and the sideways part that makes the ball curve. You cannot simply add more backspin and expect the shot to straighten out.

What really reduces curvature is keeping the spin axis from tilting as much. For the golfer, that mostly means better face-to-path and strike consistency. Spin loft also matters: more spin loft can make the same face-to-path error less damaging, but that is different from simply producing more RPM.

Extra spin also gives diminishing returns for lift while adding drag and potentially costing carry.

What matters: enough spin for the flight you need, with as little unwanted spin-axis tilt as possible. More RPM by itself is not more accurate.

Myth: Stronger lofts are “loft jacking” or cheating

A stronger static loft is not automatically a bad thing.

The loft stamped on the club is only the starting point. What the ball sees is the loft the golfer actually delivers at impact.

Golfers can deliver very different amounts of shaft lean. One golfer may arrive with almost no forward shaft lean, while another can take roughly 10–12 degrees of loft off through impact. Those golfers can need very different static lofts to produce the same useful launch window for their speed.

If two golfers use very different clubs but both arrive at roughly 26 degrees of delivered loft and produce the launch, height and descent they need, they are on equal terms. They simply needed different starting lofts to get there.

Strong loft becomes a problem when it is too strong for the golfer and causes launch, height, spin or descent angle to fall outside a useful window. A traditional loft can be just as poor a fit if it produces too much delivered loft for that golfer.

What matters: whether the static loft works with your delivery to produce the right ball flight, not the number stamped on the sole.
